Ba\u00f1os de Agua Santa,<\/b>\u00a0commonly referred to as\u00a0Ba\u00f1os<\/b>, is a city in eastern\u00a0Tungurahua Province, in central\u00a0Ecuador. Ba\u00f1os is the second most populous city in Tungurahua, after\u00a0Ambato, the capital, and is a major tourist center. It is known as the “Gateway to the\u00a0Amazon”, as it is located on the\u00a0Pastaza River\u00a0in the\u00a0Amazon River\u00a0basin, and has a newly paved road to\u00a0Puyo.<\/p>\n
The city is also a\u00a0Roman Catholic\u00a0religious center, as some Catholic believers say that the\u00a0Virgin Maryappeared nearby a\u00a0waterfall. So a sculpture of the virgin, called\u00a0Virgen de Agua Santa<\/i>, was placed in thecathedral. The history of the town is intimately linked with the highly active Tungurahua volcano.
